Picnic in the Onco Paedi Ward

spreading-love1The work that we do is often heartbreaking, and listening to all the stories of the battles that our Little Fighters and their families are facing, sharing the news that another Little Fighter has earned his wings and constantly trying to source more funding to enable us to do what we do can be heartbreaking, frustrating and depressing… but then we get to do what we are here for… to make the lives of our Little Fighters a little bit easier… to show them some love… to give them some treats… and to put a smile on their faces, and it makes all the difficult times worthwhile as we remember why we do what we do…

Although it is officially Spring and we had a few wonderful sunshine days last week, Thursday was winter again in Cape Town, but there were smiles and love a-plenty in Tygerberg Hospital’s Paediatric Oncology Ward when the Little Fighters Cancer Trust arrived with a wonderful picnic for all the Little Fighters – chocolate cupcake covered smiles and all kinds of treats and gifts brought some warmth to many hearts.

Musician Extraordinaire, Champion Open-Water Swimmer and Little Fighters Cancer Trust Ambassador Carina Bruwer joined us, and had everyone’s feet tapping with her magical flute….drumming and tambourine support was provided by the children.

THANK YOU to:

Fair Cape Dairies for the yoghurts, fruit juice and chocolate milk….these were most certainly enjoyed by all, and the children and their parents were all very glad about the huge amount of goodies we could leave for them to enjoy over the next couple of days.

Lollos for all the Lollos and Lettie dolls. They have found new homes, and there were plenty of hugs and kisses!

Vineyard Superspar & Tops Southern Paarl for the snack packs, given with so much love.

Daleen Laing for the beautiful, delicious cupcakes. Chocolate was definitely the best choice!

Our Supporters for the blankets, with which we could gift every child as well as all the mothers who were really appreciative of the extra warmth in the cold weather.

Great fun was had by all, and although around  half of the children could not leave their beds to join us, Team LFCT hand-delivered picnic goodies to every single room.

Donations Needed Urgently

Cancer is expensive, and we are really struggling at the moment, as some pledges and commitments by a number of large sponsors have not been kept to, so if you can, please make a donation today to help us continue to help these Little Fighters and their Families – we are often the only help that they get and our coffers are currently bare!

The Little Fighters Cancer Trust is a registered NPO with PBO status. This affords private and corporate donors the taxation benefits as set out in Section 18A.

BEE score points are also accumulated.

About LFCT

This is a blog about CHILDHOOD CANCER and CHILDHOOD CANCER AWARENESS Little Fighters Cancer Trust is a non-profit organisation that offers support and aid to Children with Cancer and their families. When a child is diagnosed with cancer it affects the whole family. One of the parents, usually the mother, must give up their job to care for the child and this creates financial problems for the family. In South Africa especially the majority of these families are not well-to-do; many of them are rural. A diagnosis of cancer can wipe out any family’s finances, let alone a poor family. The costs of special medications, special diets, hospital stays, transport to and from the hospital or clinic and accommodation and food costs for the mother who spends most of the time at her child’s bedside are astronomical. These are the people and problems that fall through the cracks, and these are the people that Little Fighters Cancer Trust has pledged to help in any way possible. LFCT takes a holistic approach to assisting the Children with Cancer and their Families, with the main aim to be the preservation of individual dignity and pride. Little Fighters Cancer Trust also focuses on promotion and advocacy of National Childhood Cancer Awareness in an effort to increase awareness of Early Warning Signs of Childhood Cancer. This would result in earlier diagnosis, giving the Child with Cancer more of a chance at Treatment and Survival. See "About" for more Background info
