Please Support Our Mother’s Day Project

Mother’s Day is a celebration honouring the mother of the family, as well as motherhood, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in society.

All mothers deserve a day to be honoured, and no mothers deserve to be honoured more than mothers of Children with Cancer. These mothers live under tremendous stress for months, sometimes years while their child is engaged in a battle for their life.

Put yourself in the shoes of one of these mothers ~ your child has been given what amounts to a death sentence before they have even had a chance to really live…

Add to this the confusion and uncertainty; the many visits to doctors, clinics, and hospitals; the myriad of tests and treatments; the fear that their child may die; the financial strain and the strain of trying to give your other children what they need too…

Now think about the many hours, weeks and often months that these mothers spend in hospital wards at the bedside of their child, praying, crying while they sleep and trying to show a brave smiling face when they are awake…

Birthdays, Christmas, Easter, Anniversaries, Kwanza, Pesach… none of them matter to a mother if her child is ill… she will maintain a vigil at their bedside, often to the detriment of her own health…

There is no velvet so soft as a mother’s lap,
No rose as lovely as her smile,
No path so flowery as that imprinted with her footsteps.
~ Archibald Thompson ~

Many of our “Onco Moms” as we call them, come from under-privileged backgrounds and often have to travel very far from home to seek medical attention for their Child with Cancer, which also means that they have no family or friends close by to offer them support.

These are the mothers that the Little Fighters Cancer Trust’s Mother’s Day Project (which falls under our Special Celebrations and Events) honours every year ~ the hundreds of Mothers who will be sitting in a Paediatric Oncology Hospital Ward  on Mother’s Day (May 14th this year) ~ most of them alone…

We would like to ~as we have done every year ~ spoil every Mommy who can’t be spoiled at home by their family on that day, with a “goodie bag” filled with treats and niceties, because they SO deserve it.

IDEALLY, and with your kind donations and sponsorships, we would be able to gift every Mommy with the following, in a pretty gift bag, with a Mother’s Day card:

• Body Lotion
• Body Spray
• Body Wash
• Toothpaste and Toothbrush
• Facecloth
• Sanitary Pads
• EITHER a lip gloss, lipstick, nail polish or mascara
• Pretty Note book and Pen
• Box of Chocolates

The above-mentioned items would be a source of practical Support, a tremendous Spoil and a hugely appreciated Blessing to these Mothers.

Should we receive sufficient funding to allow it, we would also love to provide all the Mommies, Nurses and Children with Cancer in the Wards we visit on the day with cakes, bottles of fruit juice, packets of crisps, paper plates and cups so they can have a little celebration to take their mind off all the pain and stress, if even just for a short while…

Our planning for this Mother’s Day includes:

  • 10 Paediatric Oncology Hospital Wards
  • Average of 20 Mommies per Ward
  • Average of 8 Nurses per Ward
  • Average of 20 Children per Ward

(We will also include Mommies of the #LFCTFamilies whom we Support outside of hospital!)

Quick Financial Costing

Gift Bags @ R250.00 per Mommy = R5 000.00 per Ward R50 000.00
Snacks and Cool Drinks @ R1 000.00 per Ward R10 000.00

If you would like to do a product donation please contact us to ask what we have and what we need, as we believe in “waste not, want not”, and would like to make your contribution count where most needed.

Our DEADLINE for PRODUCT DONATIONS is FRIDAY MAY 5th 2017, as that will afford us enough time to package and send off the gifting to our various Representatives around the country, who will do the deliveries into the hands of the Mommies, on Sunday, May 14, 2017.

All product donations need to be sent to: Little Fighters Cancer Trust 9 KASTEEL STREET, PAARL, 7646.

We have drop-off points set up to make it more convenient for you to contribute toward our Mother’s Day 2017 Project.

Please use WhatsApp or sms to contact the drop-off point closest to you to make arrangements, as these are all Volunteers who have day jobs, and we would hate for them to get into trouble if their phones ring at work all day! They will respond to messages as they can.

About LFCT

This is a blog about CHILDHOOD CANCER and CHILDHOOD CANCER AWARENESS Little Fighters Cancer Trust is a non-profit organisation that offers support and aid to Children with Cancer and their families. When a child is diagnosed with cancer it affects the whole family. One of the parents, usually the mother, must give up their job to care for the child and this creates financial problems for the family. In South Africa especially the majority of these families are not well-to-do; many of them are rural. A diagnosis of cancer can wipe out any family’s finances, let alone a poor family. The costs of special medications, special diets, hospital stays, transport to and from the hospital or clinic and accommodation and food costs for the mother who spends most of the time at her child’s bedside are astronomical. These are the people and problems that fall through the cracks, and these are the people that Little Fighters Cancer Trust has pledged to help in any way possible. LFCT takes a holistic approach to assisting the Children with Cancer and their Families, with the main aim to be the preservation of individual dignity and pride. Little Fighters Cancer Trust also focuses on promotion and advocacy of National Childhood Cancer Awareness in an effort to increase awareness of Early Warning Signs of Childhood Cancer. This would result in earlier diagnosis, giving the Child with Cancer more of a chance at Treatment and Survival. See "About" for more Background info
