#‎24Challenge‬ Cycling for Childhood Cancer: Report Back

POSTER CYCLIST 2

Unfortunately Francois had to give up his attempt at around 4am Tuesday morning due to his body having started shutting down on him. While we feel his pain at not completing his mission, Francois is a HERO to us and to all the Little Fighters that he represented during this monumental attempt.

This young chap did not have the best of times weather-wise – he found himself cycling in the middle of a heatwave on Monday afternoon when the temperatures peaked at a sweltering 39C (102.2F) degrees, and then dropped to a chilly 8C (46F)later that evening.

There are 6 stages to Francois’ 24 Hour Challenge for Childhood Cancer Awareness:

Leg 1: Hoedspruit to Ohringstad – 87.2 km – DONE!
Leg 2: Ohringstad to Lydenburg – 48.6 km – DONE!
Leg 3: Lydenburg to Dullstroom – 56.1 km
Leg 4: Dullstroom to Carolina – 83.6 km
Leg 5: Carolina to Ermelo – 66.2 km
Leg 6: Ermelo to Volksrust – 99 km

Francois will afford himself a 15 minute break in-between each of the phases. The pace will be approximately 23-25km/hour, and he has allowed for an additional 4 hours within the 24 hour limit for eventualities.

Francois took strain on the second leg due to severe cramping, which is probably as a result of the extreme heat today, even though he was well cared for and did hydrate regularly. That is fine though, he soldiered on and did the last 30 kms without taking a break even once!

Francois Needs YOUR Support #‎24Challenge‬

francois

Francois is doing well, but he has taken HUGE strain in the past 4 hours with massive hills to climb in 39C (102.2F) degrees PLUS, and although he is being very well supported both on the road and from the sidelines, he needs YOUR support!!

His crew is ensuring that he is he is being kept well-hydrated (had to make him take a short break during the first stage to ensure he did not get heat stroke), and he is being sent voice-messages from out Little Fighters and their families to keep his spirits up and encourage him, but he needs YOUR support.

This ride is a MASSIVE challenge, and is being done to raise funds for Children with Cancer, so the best way that YOU can encourage Francois to carry on and ride like the wind is for him to see that his efforts are bearing fruit.

Here are a few photos of the first leg which he has just finished.

Francois will take a 15 minute break at Ohringstad and then begin Leg 2.

The Cycle Race Across Mpumalanga

 5th October 2015!!

Francois will depart on his epic race-against-time from just outside Hoedspruit @ 14:00 on Monday 5th October in his attempt to cycle 440 Kilometres in 24 Hours!!!

Mpumalanga, formally known as Eastern Transvaal, and locally referred to as ‘The Place Where the Sun Rises’ is considered to be one of the most geographically diverse and unbelievably beautiful places in South Africa.

Mpumalanga lies in the east of South Africa, north of KwaZulu-Natal and bordering Swaziland and Mozambique. In the northeast, the land rises towards mountain peaks and then terminates in an immense escarpment. In some places, this escarpment plunges hundreds of metres down to the low-lying area known as the Lowveld.

Mpumalanga is known for the saga of the 1870s gold rush era, a wealth of fascinating tribal legends, and majestic mountains, panoramic passes, valleys, rivers, waterfalls and forests characterise the landscape.
