Mosaic Association of South Africa (MASA) – Heart of GOLD Award

LFCT_Golden_Heart_Medal_ 1B

Little Fighters Cancer Trust established the Little Fighters Cancer Trust Heart of GOLD Medal awards recently to acknowledge and thank individuals who have shown that they have Hearts of GOLD by their unsolicited, unselfish deeds in helping Little Fighters Cancer Trust do what we do!

This month is it our absolute privilege and HONOUR to bestow this award on a group of people who really went above and beyond to put some smiles on the face of our Little Fighters and some coins in the coffers of the Little Fighters Cancer Trust at the same time; the Members of the   Mosaic Association of South Africa (MASA) and all their friends, family and other helpers who made the Butterflies for Kids with Cancerproject so successful.

masa heart of gold awardEvery year MASA selects a beneficiary or cause to support with mosaics to brighten their environment but also as a means to raise funds. Association members are requested to create a themed mosaic for this purpose. Previous projects can be viewed HERE.

Little Fighters Cancer Trust was thrilled to be chosen as the Mosaic Association of South Africa’s 2015 beneficiary, via the “Butterflies for Kids with Cancer” Project .

The 2015 Butterflies for Kids with Cancer project invited MASA members as well as their friends, family and supporters across South Africa to create either a 20 x 20cm wood base or a wood cut-out of a butterfly, mosaiced in bright, cheerful colours. Each participant over the age of 18 would also make a cash donation of R50. All the donations would be paid over directly to LFCT.

MASA “Butterflies for Kids with Cancer” Project Update: Final Figures

Arabella-wbg-400

When the Mosaic Association South Africa (MASA) selected the Little Fighters Cancer Trust as the recipient of their annual  national community service project – “Butterflies for Kids with Cancer” I don’t think that either they or the Little Fighters Cancer Trust ever thought that the response would be SO fantastic.

MASA members joined in with glee, getting their friends, family, mosaic classes and even schools involved in the project, and we even had people from South Africa and from overseas who had no connection with MASA or LFCT asking to join in… and they did… we received butterflies from as far-afield as New Zealand and Australia and also some from our neighbouring countries.

By the end of September we were able to finalise the numbers and are overwhelmed and stunned to be able to confirm that in excess of 500 beautiful and colourful butterflies of various shapes and sizes were donated to make our Paediatric Onco wards a bit happier and friendlier for our Little Fighters. Hospital wards are not nice places; they are dreary and cold and yucky, and we know that these beautiful butterflies will put smiles on the faces of all our Little Fighters and all the other Children with Cancer who spend so much time in hospital.

Many of the Butterflies have their own little stories attached, and many were created in memory of someone’s loved one who lost either their Fight, or who is still Fighting Cancer. Notably, the majority of these wonderful creations were made by children and we love that!

Each butterfly was also accompanied by a small donation from the artist and total donations amounted to just over R16 500!!

gold_ribbon_with_butterfly

And here we have it, Folks! With over 200 votes cast, the Little Fighters Cancer Trust and MASA are proud to introduce the TOP 20 Butterflies for Kids with Cancer as voted for by you!

These 20 butterflies will be sent directly to the Little Fighters Cancer Trust to be sold, auctioned or raffled off to raise more funds so make your pick as to which one you would like to brighten up your home or office (or give as a gift)! We will announce exactly how we will be offering these later this month.

The other approximately 330 butterflies will now be mounted on wooden strips ready for installation in the Paediatric Oncology Wards of all the hospitals with which the Little Fighters Cancer Trust works all over South Africa, so that they will look as though they have just alighted on the panels in a bright array of beautiful colours and shapes that are sure to bring some joy to our Little Fighters.

Congratulations to Lorna Gardner and the team from East London who have 11 Butterflies in the Top 20 – clear evidence of the commitment and dedication to this project.

MASA Butterflies for Kids with Cancer – Top 50

Butterfly

 WOW!!! WOW!!! WOW!!!

Team Little Fighters Cancer Trust is absolutely thrilled, and so grateful to the Members of 1176157_528348470574429_1979293503_n copythe Mosaic Association of South Africa (MASA) for their overwhelming caring, compassion and generosity of time and spirit that they gave to the MASA Butterflies for Kids with Cancer Project in aid of the Little Fighters Cancer Trust.

The project ran from March this year and closed on 28th August, and although it seemed slow to start, these AMAZING people gave their all, creating butterflies themselves and roping in friends and family and even some schools – they had butterflies coming in from several areas across South Africa, from Swaziland, and even from Australia and New Zealand!

Where we thought we would get maybe 50 or 60 butterflies to brighten up the Paediatric Oncology Wards these wonderful souls have created a whopping 350 butterflies and counting…

Not only have they created a cornucopia of colour with which to brighten the wards in which our Little Fighters spend so much of their time fighting this horrible disease, but as each creation is accompanied by a R50 donation, they have also raised approximately R13 110* for the Little Fighters Cancer Trust! (*to be verified).

Again we say WOW!!! WOW!!! and WOW!!! and Thank You, Thank You, Thank You!

💖  💚  💛   Take a bow, Ladies and Gents, Boys and Girls – you did GOOD!   💖  💚  💛

The Top 50 butterflies have been chosen, out of which a Top 20 will be chosen. The Top 20 butterflies will be shipped to LFCT to be auctioned, raffled or sold at the Little Fighters Cancer Trust Gold Event to raise even more funding from this project.

All those who would like to help choose our Top 20 should do so by either clicking on a picture below then clicking through the gallery to see bigger images and the names or just hovering your cursor over the pic to see the name, or by visiting the MASA website; choose your favourite Top 3 butterflies and e-mail those names to info@mosaicassociation.co.za (VOTING CLOSES 12th SEPTEMBER 2015)

Welcome Lady Arabella

butterfly of Life

Butterflies remind us not to take things so seriously within our lives. They awaken a sense of lightness and joy. They remind us to get up and move, for if you do not move, you cannot dance.

When we were originally approached by MASA and told that they would like to run the “Butterflies for Kids with Cancer” Project in aid of Little Fighters Cancer Trust we were thrilled ~ firstly that they had chosen us as a beneficiary, and secondly that they had chosen to do butterflies.

The butterfly has huge symbolism, you see…

Native American BeliefThe butterfly is one of the most emblematic totem animals symbolising personal transformation: Powerful transformation; Renewal, Rebirth; Metamorphosis; Moving through Different Life Cycles; Elevation from Earthly Matters, Tuning into Emotional or Spiritual; The World of the Soul, the Psyche. A secondary meaning of the butterfly is about finding Joy in Life and Lightness of Being.

Chinese & Greek Symbology ~ The butterfly is a symbol of the Psyche of the Soul or Soul World, representing Immortality.

Here are the latest additions to  our growing garden of beautiful butterflies all made with love for out Little Fighters and soon to adorn the walls of the various Paediatric Oncology Wards throughout South Africa.

Included in this lot, please note that there are 4 butterflies that have traveled all the way from New Zealand… when the “Butterflies for Kids with Cancer” Project organiser, Cher’s family in New Zealand heard about the project they also wanted to do something for Little Fighters Cancer Trust, so they made us some beautiful butterflies and sent them over, all carefully and safely wrapped in bubble-wrap.
